What is a CrossFit drop-in?
A drop-in is a visit to train at a gym where you are not a regular member. It can help you maintain your routine while travelling, meet a local training community or experience a different coaching approach.
Despite the name, it does not necessarily mean turning up without notice. Each gym sets its booking process, experience requirements and visitor arrangements. Contact the gym before travelling there.
Why visit another gym?
A different class can introduce a new coaching cue, a different session structure or simply a change of surroundings. You can meet people who share your interest and keep a familiar habit during a trip.
A visit is still a coached class rather than a guarantee that you can practise any movement you choose. Follow the planned session and ask about separate open-gym access if you want to complete your own programme.
Find a suitable session
Search for gyms near your destination, then use the gym's own information to check the timetable and visitor policy. Allow time for transport, check-in and changing. Confirm facilities such as showers if they affect your travel plans.
Tell the gym how long you have trained and which movements are unfamiliar. If you are completely new, ask whether you should book an introductory class instead of a regular drop-in. A visitor booking is not automatically a beginner induction.
Ask about fees and payment
Prices vary, so check the current fee directly rather than relying on an old travel article. Ask what it includes, how to pay and whether there is a cancellation policy. Multi-visit arrangements or merchandise offers may exist, but they should be confirmed with the gym.
Do not assume a free session or a T-shirt exchange is available. A clear booking avoids an awkward conversation at the start of class.
Prepare for the visit
Bring suitable training clothes, shoes, water and any personal accessories the gym recommends. Complete requested registration beforehand and arrive with time to introduce yourself to the coach.
Explain relevant movement limitations and discuss scaling before the clock starts. Use the coach's local instructions for equipment, working areas and putting kit away. Different gyms can have different routines even when the workout names are familiar.
Make the most of the experience
Introduce yourself, listen to the briefing and be open to feedback. You can enjoy training with new people without matching a regular member's load or pace. Ask permission before photographing others or sharing images.
After the class, note any useful coaching points and thank the team. If you leave a review, describe your actual experience. Our drop-in checklist brings the practical steps together. For your first sessions more generally, see CrossFit for beginners.
