Before the drop-in

A little preparation makes visiting an unfamiliar gym easier. Start with our drop-in explanation if you have not booked one before.

  • Choose the gym: check its location and visitor information. Read about the class rather than choosing solely from photographs.
  • Confirm the time: allow for transport, arrival and changing. Ask about showers if you need them.
  • Book your place: use the gym's requested process and wait for confirmation where required.
  • Share your experience: explain whether you are new, train regularly or follow a specific programme.
  • Check the fee: confirm payment, cancellation terms and anything the booking includes.

A booking for a regular class does not necessarily include access to open gym. If you want to do your own session, ask explicitly.

Pack for the session

Bring training clothes, suitable shoes and water. Ask whether you need personal accessories such as a jump rope, grips or a towel. Check registration requirements before leaving for the gym.

Do not assume every location has the same equipment or changing facilities as your usual gym. Pack according to the confirmed session and what you actually use.

When you arrive

Arrive early enough to check in and meet the coach without interrupting the briefing. Introduce yourself and explain any movements you cannot currently perform or need to adapt.

Find out where to leave belongings and how the gym organises equipment. Listen for local instructions about lifting areas, sharing stations and returning kit. Ask before setting up extra equipment.

During the class

  • Follow the briefing: confirm the order, scoring and intended pace.
  • Agree scaling: choose movements and loads with the coach before starting.
  • Accept feedback: a different explanation may help you understand a familiar movement.
  • Respect others: give people space and share equipment as instructed.
  • Keep your own objective: you do not need a personal record to make the visit worthwhile.

Be friendly without assuming that everyone wants a conversation during a timed effort. Enjoy the session while staying attentive to the class around you.

After the workout

Follow the gym's cleanup routine and allow time to settle before your next journey. Thank the coach and, where welcome, chat with other members. Note any useful technique advice while it is fresh.

A photograph or gym T-shirt can be a souvenir, but neither is required. Ask permission before taking pictures of others and before sharing them. If you leave feedback, keep it honest and specific to your visit.

Keep the useful lessons

Record the session and any adaptations in your usual log. Discuss new technical cues with your regular coach if they affect your ongoing programme. Keep the gym's booking details if you expect to return.

Our scaling guide can help you prepare questions for the coach. If a booked class is unavailable during your trip, the hotel WOD selection offers a separate option suited to limited space.
