Before buying, check the space you can use every day
A rowing machine must fit during training and remain practical to set up and store. A machine that fits on a floor plan can become awkward if it blocks a door, requires moving a table or leaves too little clearance for your stroke.
Check three things before choosing: usable floor space, acceptable noise at your intended training times and the total delivered cost. These can matter more than a large screen or extra resistance settings.
How much space does a home rower need?
Distinguish the machine’s footprint from the area needed to use it. For example, Concept2 lists the RowErg at approximately 244 × 61 cm and recommends a 274 × 122 cm training area. These figures apply to that machine rather than every rower; consult the instructions for the model you are considering.
Allow access to the seat, clearance for your body at the finish and room to reach the adjustments. Avoid fragile objects immediately behind you. For shared use, check that seat travel and adjustments suit everyone.
- Mark the proposed footprint on the floor using a tape measure and removable markers.
- Add the clearance specified by the manufacturer.
- Check door openings, furniture access and walkways.
- Think through a full session: setup, phone or display, towel and storage afterwards.
- Measure the delivery route, including the entrance, stairs, lift and hallway corners.
Folding, separating and upright storage are different
A folding rower still occupies space when folded. A separable machine may require disconnecting two sections. Upright storage must be supported by the instructions: a photograph of a rower standing against a wall is not permission to store it that way.
Concept2 advises against standing a complete RowErg on end and recommends separating the two sections for storage. Consider tipping risk and handling. Follow the individual instructions for other models.
Ask whether you can realistically carry out the storage routine after every session. Saving floor space is less useful if setup discourages you from training. Check the weight you need to move, the transport wheels and access to the storage position.
How noisy is a rower in an apartment?
Sound inside the room and vibration transmitted through the building are different issues. You may hear the resistance system, seat rollers, drive mechanism or small impacts during handling. The floor can also transmit vibration into another room or the space below.
Air rowers produce airflow noise that changes with effort. Magnetic models are often marketed for quieter use, but the rail, seat and construction still matter. Water rowers also make sound during the stroke. Without measurements under comparable conditions, a decibel ranking would be misleading.
- Try your usual intensity: a few easy strokes do not represent repeated accelerations.
- Listen from another room: a closed door changes perception without establishing what a neighbour will hear.
- Check stability: movement on uneven flooring can add unwanted noise.
- Choose realistic training times: consider other people at home and neighbours, especially early or late.
Will a mat solve the noise problem?
A suitable mat can protect the floor and help with some contact or movement. It does not automatically make a machine silent or guarantee vibration isolation in your building.
Check compatibility with your floor and the rower’s stability. An overly soft layer or improvised supports may alter the machine’s footing. Start with installation that follows the instructions and maintain the rail as the manufacturer recommends.
What total budget should you allow?
Compare ownership cost rather than the advertised price alone. The total depends on the machine, delivery and services you actually need. The following table lists costs to check rather than providing a personal quotation.
| Cost | What to check before paying |
|---|---|
| Machine | Exact version, included accessories and new or used condition |
| Delivery and assembly | Kerbside or room delivery, and whether assembly costs extra |
| Floor protection | Useful dimensions and compatibility with your flooring |
| Screen and connectivity | Standalone operation and any phone or tablet required |
| Digital services | Free functions and optional or necessary subscriptions |
| Maintenance | Any consumables, parts and local servicing |
| Returns | Return window, packaging requirements and heavy-item transport costs |
A useful calculation is delivered price + essential accessories + chosen services over twelve months. Separate immediate spending from recurring costs. Do not rely on a guaranteed future resale price to justify the purchase.

New or used: useful checks
For a used machine, ask to see it working. Check seat movement, the rail, drive system and display. Confirm included parts and replacement availability. A monitor’s recorded history alone does not prove the condition of the entire machine.
For a new machine, review the seller, delivery terms and servicing in your country. In either case, plan transport: a bargain that will not fit through your staircase remains difficult to use.
Your checklist before ordering
- I measured the training and storage areas.
- The delivery route and access to the room are workable.
- The instructions allow my intended storage method.
- I assessed noise at an intensity close to my sessions.
- The budget includes necessary charges and the services I want.
- I understand return terms and maintenance arrangements.
Once the installation is ready, take time to adjust the footrests and learn the stroke. Our rowing technique and settings guide helps you get started.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put a rower in a bedroom?
Yes, provided the training area, access and storage are suitable. Consider ventilation and noise at your intended times. The machine’s footprint alone is not enough to decide.
Is a magnetic rower completely silent?
No. The resistance system is only one source of sound. The seat, rail, movement and floor also matter. A marketing claim does not replace checking your own setting.
Do rowing machines require a subscription?
It depends on the machine and functions you want. Check what the monitor provides without an app and the terms of connected programmes. A trial service may become paid later.
