What is a chipper?
A chipper organises a sequence of tasks, generally completed one after another. You finish the prescribed work at one station before moving to the next. The programme may include several movements with different volumes.
The term describes the workout’s construction. It does not automatically define duration, difficulty or scoring. A chipper can, for example, be performed For Time, with or without a time cap.
Read the order and how work is shared
Identify the tasks in order, then check repetitions, distances, loads and rest. A format name does not replace the instructions for each station.
In a team version, the programme should explain how to share repetitions and when partners change. Do not assume that work prescribed for an individual can simply be divided without further adjustment.
An example of how to read the workout
A workout might prescribe a rowing distance, followed by squats and then barbell movements. “Chipper” describes progression through this list. If the instructions specify “For Time”, your result is the time needed to complete the entire programme.
If a time cap applies, the scoring instructions should explain what to record when work remains. Different units do not automatically convert into one another.
Anticipate fatigue between stations
The volume of one exercise can affect your ability to perform the next. Before starting, identify technically demanding tasks and movements that place repeated demands on the same grip or support positions.
A long set does not necessarily need to be unbroken. Choose manageable sets that fit the remaining work and the workout’s purpose. If one task blocks progress entirely, consider adapting the movement, load or volume.
Find a chipper workout
Use the chipper workout search and read the complete programme. Allow time for preparation and warming up as well as the main workout.
Frequently asked questions
Is a chipper always very long?
No. Its duration depends on the tasks and volumes, rather than the format’s name alone.
Can a chipper be a team workout?
Yes, when the programme specifies the organisation and division of work. Individual and team versions cannot be compared directly.
