Two settings for training
Swimming and CrossFit offer different tasks and environments. Pool practice involves water confidence, stroke technique and pacing. Gym sessions may include lifting, bodyweight skills and conditioning. You can enjoy both without assuming that either replaces the other's specific practice.
Decide whether swimming, gym performance or simply maintaining both activities is your current priority. That choice helps determine which sessions should be demanding and which should remain easier.
Give swimming its own objective
A technical lesson, a relaxed familiar swim and hard intervals are different sessions. Plan the content rather than labelling every visit to the pool as active recovery.
If you are new to swimming, begin with appropriate instruction and a supervised setting. Ordinary conditioning practice does not require underwater breath-holding challenges or swimming alone when fatigued.
Choose the role of gym work
A strength-focused session can provide time to learn and progress appropriate exercises. A mixed WOD introduces another conditioning task. Neither is automatically the most useful choice for your swimming goal.
Tell the coach about your pool schedule, particularly if several sessions place substantial demands on the shoulders or upper body. Adapt the movement, volume or timing when the planned work does not fit the week.
Does swimming count as recovery?
It can be a relatively easy activity for someone who already swims comfortably, but the effort depends on technique, pace and duration. A difficult interval session adds training stress even though it takes place without running impacts.
Judge the actual session and how you respond rather than assuming that water removes fatigue. A rest day does not need to become another workout to be worthwhile.
Organise the combination
Start with a manageable arrangement and assess it before adding more. Place key sessions first and account for travel, changing time and the practical demands of pool access. Alternating activities across days is one possible arrangement, not a universal requirement.
If you combine activities on one day, discuss the order and workload with your coaches. Keep enough capacity for the intended quality of both tasks instead of making each a maximum test.
Track something useful
Record the swimming task, approximate effort and the gym sessions nearby. Compare like with like: the same distance at a different stroke or intensity is not the same session.
