Understand the race before choosing a goal

HYROX combines running with functional workout stations in a set sequence. A race demands managing the work between stations as well as learning each exercise. Training adaptations do not change the competition prescription for the division you enter.

Start with the HYROX overview and the eight stations.

Choose a participation format

Consider the work you want to complete individually or share with teammates. Singles, Doubles and Team Relay organise responsibility differently. A team entry is not simply an individual race with optional help.

Read the division guide and confirm the category offered at your chosen event before booking.

Try a discovery session

Use an introductory session to learn equipment, movement instructions and how running feels between tasks. Choose appropriate loads, distances and repetitions with the coach. There is no need to reproduce the complete race on the first visit.

Afterwards, note unfamiliar stations and where technique or transitions needed attention. Those observations are more useful for the next session than ranking a first practice effort.

Build preparation around your starting point

Include running, movement practice and appropriate strength work. The balance depends on your existing training, availability and chosen format. Adding sessions to a busy week requires a different plan from returning after inactivity.

Practise unfamiliar movements before adding repeated work and then running transitions. Full simulations are not necessary every week. See organising HYROX training and getting started with running.

Prepare the first event

Check the exact venue, arrival instructions, briefing and ticket conditions. Use clothing and shoes already tried in training. If racing with partners, agree how you will communicate and share permitted work.

Read the applicable standards and transition instructions before race day. Start with a pace informed by training rather than treating the opening run as an isolated speed test.

Common beginner mistakes

Do not neglect running because the stations feel familiar. A competition load is not automatically an appropriate first learning load. Avoid turning every session into a maximum effort or assuming training repetitions would all satisfy race standards.

There is no universal preparation period that suits everyone. Set an achievable goal and review the plan as your experience develops.
