Organise the Open at your gym: Intramurals, teams and scoring

What is an Intramural?

It is an in-house team challenge run by your gym during the Open. Members join a team and earn points under the gym’s own rules. It gives everyone a shared challenge across the three weeks, with internal standings they can follow.

Intramural teams are different from Pairs Competition partners. The internal leaderboard also does not replace official Open standings.

Where does the gym set it up?

For 2027, CrossFit has announced an Intramural dashboard in the Affiliate ToolKit. Owners, coaches and managers with ToolKit access can start setting up their competition on 7 January 2027, then invite members.

The platform lets the gym create teams, define scoring categories and point values, and track standings. The gym remains responsible for running its challenge.

How does a member join a team?

The gym invites members through email, a QR code or a poster in the gym. Participants need a CrossFit ID. CrossFit states that paid Open registration is not required to take part in the Intramural.

After joining, members can view their own points and their team’s points. Anyone also wanting an official Open ranking must separately follow the Open registration and score-submission process.

How are points awarded?

Categories added by the gymThe gym chooses which actions earn points and how many. Captains can help track them.

There is no single points system for every gym to copy. Before starting, tell members which actions count, their point values and whether they count once or each week. Explain who checks points and how to report an error.

Launch the challenge in five steps

  1. Name an organiser. One person coordinates internal registration, information and leaderboard corrections.
  2. Form the teams. Announce team members, captains and how additional participants can join.
  3. Publish the rules. Make points, deadlines, any caps and tie handling available before the first results.
  4. Plan workout slots. Arrange briefings, judges and score tracking. Equipment and rotations depend on each week’s announced workout.
  5. Invite members. Share access to the challenge and explain where to find points and who can answer questions.

Which leaderboard should you check?

  • Intramural: your team’s points within your gym, under its internal rules.
  • Individual Open: your official result within your division on the CrossFit Games leaderboard.
  • Pairs Competition: a partner result in a separate competition. Read how Open Pairs works.

Label each set of standings clearly when sharing results. An Intramural points total is not an official workout score.

What should organisers do each week?

  • After the announcement: read the standards, confirm equipment and brief participants and judges.
  • During performances: record results and clearly identify the individual or pair concerned.
  • Before the deadline: remind Open entrants to submit their official scores. Taking part in a gym session does not submit a score for them.
  • After performances: check internal points, resolve reported errors and share the team standings.
