What is an EMOM?

EMOM means Every Minute on the Minute. Start the prescribed task at the beginning of each minute; the time left generally provides recovery. The number of minutes defines the overall structure.

Read alternating minutes

An EMOM can repeat one task or alternate movements. Identify what happens on each minute and how many cycles are required. An interval starting every two minutes is a different schedule and should be stated explicitly.

The clock is not always the score

The result may be completed tasks, load or another prescribed measure. An EMOM is not automatically a race for the most repetitions. Read what counts as success before beginning.

Preserve the intended organisation

If early sets already occupy the whole minute, review repetitions, load or movement difficulty with your coach. Removing recovery can change the training purpose. Practise the task and prepare equipment before starting.

Record your session

Note the sequence, duration, loads, completed minutes and any changes. Compare similar tasks rather than treating all EMOM sessions as equivalent.
